Kochi, May 22 — Cochin International Airport has activated round‑the‑clock health surveillance after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
Heightened Screening Measures
Passengers arriving from Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan are subject to thermal checks, mandatory self‑declaration forms, and verification of their 21‑day travel history.
Isolation wards have been prepared at Ernakulam General Hospital, Government Hospital Kalamassery, and District Hospital Aluva for suspected cases.
Airport authorities emphasized strict use of three‑layer masks and proper hand hygiene.
Why the Concern?
The outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which currently has no approved vaccine or specific treatment. With a mortality rate between 30–50%, officials warn that early detection is critical. Symptoms — including fever, sore throat, headache, vomiting, weakness, and unexplained bleeding — can appear two to 21 days after exposure.
National Preparedness
India’s Union Health Ministry has directed all airports, including Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, to remain on alert. Passengers showing symptoms must report to airport health authorities before immigration clearance. Officials stress that no Ebola case has been detected in India so far, but vigilance is essential.
Global Context
As of May 20, WHO reported 600 suspected cases and 139 suspected deaths in Central Africa. WHO Director‑General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed concern over the outbreak’s “scale and speed.”
Local Impact
Kerala’s large NRI population and heavy international traffic through Kochi — especially from Gulf countries with African connections — make the airport a critical checkpoint. Authorities reassure residents there is no cause for panic, citing India’s successful handling of the 2014 Ebola scare.
