Gold prices stabilized in quiet trading on Tuesday after touching a more than one-month low during the prior session. Bullion traders remained largely on the sidelines, waiting for crucial guidance from the U.S. Federal Reserve’s upcoming policy announcement.

Spot gold hovered around $4,302.13 per ounce after briefly dipping to its lowest level since August 7 on Monday. Meanwhile, U.S. gold futures slipped 0.2% to trade at $4,341.70 per ounce.

All Eyes on the Federal Reserve

The two-day Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting concludes on Wednesday, with the rate statement scheduled for release at 18:00 GMT.

Financial markets are pricing in strong odds of a 25-basis-point increase, which would adjust the Fed's benchmark borrowing rate to a target range of 3.75% to 4.00%. Because gold yields no interest of its own, rising interest rates increase the opportunity cost of holding the precious metal against interest-bearing assets like cash and sovereign debt.

Market analysts note that the trajectory mapped out in the Fed's forward guidance and the press conference will carry far greater weight than the rate hike itself. Tony Sycamore, market analyst at IG, pointed out that the tone set by the central bank leadership will dictate bullion's near-term direction. A hawkish stance signaling a continuous, meeting-by-meeting tightening cycle could trigger further declines across risk assets and precious metals. Conversely, indications of a measured, data-dependent pace would offer vital breathing room for gold.

Persistent Inflation and Soaring Treasury Yields

The Fed's policy dilemma follows recent economic releases confirming stubborn price pressures. U.S. consumer price data released on Friday showed inflation accelerated in August, with core inflation registering its steepest rise in four months.

Anticipation of prolonged monetary discipline pushed benchmark U.S. 10-year Treasury yields to 5% on Monday, breaking that psychological threshold for the first time since October 2023. The spike in yields has intensified pressure across broader equity markets and diverted short-term capital away from non-yielding commodities.

Geopolitical Friction Caps Downside

Despite monetary headwinds, bullion continues to draw underlying support from its role as a premier safe-haven asset.

Escalating tensions in the Middle East—including fresh drone and missile attacks launched by Yemen's Houthi forces toward Saudi Arabia and heightened activity along the Red Sea corridor—have kept supply-disruption concerns elevated in energy markets, bolstering crude oil and keeping gold's geopolitical risk premium intact.

Other Precious Metals

Other precious metals experienced mixed trading alongside gold's consolidation:

  • Spot Silver held steady at $63.25 per ounce.

  • Platinum gained 0.7% to reach $1,770.81 per ounce.

  • Palladium declined 0.4% to $1,288.25 per ounce.

With macroeconomic data pointing to lingering inflation and the Fed set to communicate its terminal rate outlook, gold traders are bracing for heightened volatility once the central bank delivers its verdict.
