UDHAMPUR, JAMMU & KASHMIR — In a major administrative push to address public safety and national security concerns, the district administration of Udhampur on Tuesday conducted a targeted anti-encroachment drive on Dhar Road near Mian Bagh.

The operation, which took place in close proximity to the sensitive Air Force Road, resulted in the dismantling and clearance of several illegal temporary tin structures that had been erected along the highway.

Traffic Hazards and Public Complaints

The drive was initiated following prolonged complaints from local residents and commuters regarding unauthorized structures occupying state land. According to administrative officials, the roadside structures had become a significant traffic hazard, raising the risk of accidents on the busy highway.

Speaking to the media, Naib Tehsildar Roun Maroof Khan stated, "This issue was ongoing for a long time. Many people were filing complaints in the Deputy Commissioner's (DC) office and to the Tehsildar that temporary sheds had been set up on state land. Because this is a highway, people used to gather here in the evening, which posed a severe risk of accidents."

Security Implications Near Air Force Station

Apart from civilian safety and traffic management, the operation carried critical security implications. The location of the illegal sheds on Dhar Road is highly sensitive, given its close proximity to key military installations, including an Indian Air Force (IAF) station, and its frequent use for the movement of security forces.

Security agencies and local police recently flagged a serious surveillance concern regarding these structures.

"Recently, on the request of the Air Force and the police, they brought to our notice that out of the seven sheds here, two had CCTV cameras installed that were focusing directly on the road," Naib Tehsildar Khan explained. "This is a highly sensitive area with Air Force stations and regular movement of security establishments. We issued notices beforehand, resulting in five of the sheds being removed voluntarily by the occupants. The remaining two structures were demolished by the administration today."

Part of a Broader Crackdown in Jammu & Kashmir

The anti-encroachment drive in Udhampur comes amidst an intensified administrative campaign across the Union Territory to reclaim state land and maintain law and order.

Just days prior, on May 23, the Jammu district administration executed a high-profile demolition drive in the Miran Sahib area. That operation targeted illegal properties linked to alleged drug smugglers as part of the government's zero-tolerance policy towards narcotics networks.

Officials have reiterated that similar drives will continue across the region to ensure that public safety, traffic flow, and national security protocols are not compromised by unauthorized encroachments.
