NEW DELHI — As a blistering and relentless heatwave continues to sweep across several regions of the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has issued a heartfelt appeal to citizens, urging them to take all necessary precautions against the soaring temperatures and to actively help those most vulnerable to the extreme weather.
In an official public message shared on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of staying hydrated, practicing empathy, and looking out for passersby and workers who are forced to brave the scorching sun.
A Call for National Empathy and Safety
Taking to his social media handle on X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Modi highlighted how the escalating temperatures have disrupted daily life and complicated outdoor activities for millions of citizens.
"Temperatures are continuously rising in different parts of the country, and along with this, the many difficulties caused by the heat in daily life are also increasing. I urge all my fellow citizens to take as many precautions as possible," PM Modi wrote.
The Prime Minister laid out practical advice for daily routines, urging everyone to keep themselves well-hydrated and to always carry water when leaving their homes. He additionally spotlighted the role of community compassion in fighting the heatwave.
"In such weather, your sensitivity also becomes a great source of support. If possible, do offer a glass of water to anyone who is thirsty," he added.
PM Modi also expressed his appreciation for the traditional Indian practice of keeping earthen water pots (pitchers or matkas) filled with drinking water outside homes and commercial shops for the benefit of passersby, delivery personnel, and street vendors.
Local Administrations Swing into Action: Delhi's 'Mission Mode'
In response to the severe weather conditions and the Prime Minister’s directives, local administrations across affected states have mobilized emergency relief efforts.
Highlighting the response in the national capital, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that Delhi's Heatwave Action Plan 2026 has been deployed in "mission mode" under the guidance of PM Modi. The multi-pronged strategy prioritizes public safety, active relief distribution, and animal welfare.
Key measures implemented in Delhi include:
Mass Distribution: Over 10 lakh Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) packets have been distributed to the public, particularly focusing on outdoor laborers and low-income areas.
Mobile Relief: Deployment of dedicated Mobile Heat Relief Vans navigating through highly congested and vulnerable public areas to offer immediate hydration and basic medical checkups.
Student Welfare: Implementation of the "Water Bell" system across schools to ensure children drink water at regular, scheduled intervals.
Animal & Bird Care: Setting up dedicated drinking water and cooling points throughout municipal areas to safeguard urban wildlife, street dogs, and birds from dehydration.
Extreme Temperatures: IMD Issues Severe Alerts
According to the latest meteorological bulletin from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), relief is not expected immediately. Northwest and Central India are projected to remain under the grip of intense heatwave to severe heatwave conditions for the next three to four days.
Severe heatwave conditions are being witnessed across major parts of Chhattisgarh, with isolated pockets of East Uttar Pradesh and East Madhya Pradesh recording unprecedented temperatures. The heatwave has also firmly set in over parts of Uttarakhand, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Bihar, Odisha, Telangana, and coastal Andhra Pradesh.
The IMD warned that Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi will continue to battle intense thermal conditions, with Delhi recording maximum temperatures touching 45 degree Celcius on Wednesday.
Essential Safety Guidelines Issued by Authorities
With health risks such as heat strokes and heat exhaustion on the rise, health authorities and emergency services have advised citizens to adhere to the following safety protocols:
Avoid Peak Hours: Limit direct sun exposure and strenuous outdoor tasks between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
Dress Appropriately: Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose cotton clothing to allow body heat to escape.
Never Ignore Symptoms: Immediately seek shade and medical assistance if experiencing signs of heat illness, such as dizziness, headache, nausea, rapid heart rate, or muscle cramps.
Pet Safety: Ensure pets are kept in well-shaded or indoor environments and have access to fresh water at all times.
As the country navigates through one of the most intense phases of the summer, the combined efforts of administrative proactive measures and citizen-led acts of kindness remain critical to mitigating the crisis.
